CLUMSINESS COAT

For my Investigating Normal: Adaptive and Assistive Technology course, we looked at medical as well as cultural tools that investigate the “normal” body and mind, and we design our own devices-high-tech, low-tech, digital or analog with these ideas in mind. I questioned whether personality traits could be considered a disability and designed a protective jacket filled with packaging air pillows that would serve as a prosthetic for clumsiness. Instead of making the jacket look like it was a protective bubble and that points out its purpose, I chose powerful colors of black and green and gave it a form that hid its function. The result was an outfit that seemed more fitting for an evil queen than for a clumsy person.
